In the long and storied tradition of fire stations around the world, nicknames have always held a special place in firehouse culture. They reflect the character, pride, and camaraderie of the teams who call these stations home. District 7 Fire Rescue is excited to announce the official nicknames of our two stations: Station 115 is now "The Doghouse" and Station 116 is "The Ranch."
The Tradition of Fire Station Nicknames
Fire station nicknames aren’t just for fun—they're a way for crews to express their identity and bond with one another. From New York’s “Red Hook Raiders” to Los Angeles’ “Hollywood Fire,” station nicknames date back decades, becoming an iconic part of the firefighting tradition. These names often reflect the station’s personality, location, or some inside joke that has resonated with the firefighters. They become a part of the station’s legacy, handed down to future generations of firefighters and becoming part of the local community's lore.
How "The Doghouse" and "The Ranch" Were Chosen
The nicknames for Station 115 and Station 116 were voted on by the very firefighters who serve at these locations. It was important to us that these names be chosen democratically, reflecting the shared values and identity of the teams. The names not only resonate with the crews but also tie in with the culture of service, strength, and brotherhood that defines District 7 Fire Rescue.
"The Doghouse"
Station 115, now known as “The Doghouse,” pays tribute to its history and the beloved department dog, Dotty, who was a cherished member of our team until her retirement in 2022. The name also honors the many canine companions of our staff members, who often accompany their owners during shifts. These loyal pets have become an integral part of our station family, and the name "The Doghouse" stands as a testament to their special place in our hearts.
"The Ranch"
Affectionately known as "The Ranch," Station 116 embodies the spirit of its rural surroundings. The station’s expansive property and the presence of local cattle inspired the name. Our team takes great pride in maintaining the land and addressing any challenges that arise, echoing the resilience and resourcefulness of the cowboys who helped shape the rich legacy of Texas and the Hill Country.
Custom Logos Designed by One of Our Own
The distinctive logos that will now represent “The Doghouse” and “The Ranch” were created by none other than Firefighter/Paramedic Christian Powell, a talented artist within our ranks. Christian’s designs capture the spirit of each station and serve as a visual representation of their nicknames. These logos will be displayed proudly on station gear, vehicles, and social media, showcasing the unique identities of Station 115 and Station 116.
"I took great pride in designing these logos. I consider myself lucky to not only be able to create such things, but also see them everyday while on shift. It is amazing to know that what I created will have a lasting effect on not just the buildings, but the people, the family, and the brothers who also work here day in and day out." - FF/Paramedic Christian Powell
A Message from the Fire Chief
Our fire chief is equally proud of this new chapter in our department's history. The adoption of station nicknames and logos symbolizes the unity and pride of District 7 Fire Rescue.
"Each of these patches is custom designed by one of our own. They represent the distinct differences in each station and camaraderie of our department. I could not be more proud of each member of this great organization. " -Fire Chief Kevin Clarkson
Looking Ahead
We are excited to embrace these new nicknames and logos as an essential part of our identity. They remind us of who we are, where we’ve been, and where we’re headed as a department.
